Sméagol uses the Ring for thieving and antagonizing his relatives. Sméagol strangles Déagol and claims the Ring as his own, his 'precious'. Sméagol is immediately ensnared by the Ring and demands it as his 'birthday present', but Déagol refuses. After being pulled into the water by a large fish, Déagol finds the Ring underwater and emerges from the river with his prize.
